South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive Conferences and Festivals - March 10-19, 2006 - Austin, Texas.
Francophone bands will play at the "SXSW" festival:
Daniel Balthasar (Luxembourg City LUXEMBOURG)
This young artist who composes calm, melancolic songs that can sometimes be compared to rock songs, is not a beginner. He first became famous performing many concerts with the band called "Blue Room", and then he decided to start a solo carrer. His first solo album -" Figerprints"- was a great succes, according to the public and the press. Daniel Bathasar is certainly the artsit from luxembourg the most "on air" on radios in Luxembourg.
Troy von Balthazar (Paris FRANCE)
troy von balthazar.jpgBehind the name Troy von Balthazar, we can find Bruno Balthazar, singer and guitar player of the band "Chokebore". He lives in France several months every year, and this is where he recorded two songs of his last EP. When he’s in solo, it’s not like when he plays with Chokebore, and Bruno really want to distinguish the sounds of his two projects. In his last EP, he plays all the instruments to show us that he’s the only boss of His project. The result can be compared to "Pendleton", a famous artist from Swiss.
Birdy Nam Nam (Paris FRANCE)
World Champions Djs (DMC), BIRDY NAM NAM is composed by 4 impressive Deejays: DJ PONE (Double H DJ Crew, Svinkels, TRIPTIK, 4 times champion of France, several European champion titles), CRAZY B (Alliance Etnik, 7 times champion of France, many international titles), DJ NEED & LITTLE MIKE.
Rhys Chatham (Paris FRANCE)
Important figure of the undergound scene of New-York in the 70’s and 80’s, Rhys Chatham brought a new energy in the post-minimalistic contemprary music because he used instruments supposed to be "reserved" for Rock’n’Roll: electric guitars, bass guitars, drums... He became a trumpet player to preserve his eardrum (!). Today living in France, Rhys Chatham tryed Drum’n Bass and recently had his majeur creation called "Angel Moves Too Fast to See", played by 100 guitars.
dEUS (Antwerp BELGIUM)
The first Belgian-based indie act ever to sign to a major international label, the improvisational avant grunge group dEUS was originally comprised of vocalist/guitarist Tom Barman, bassist Stef Kamil Carlens, drummer Julle De Borgher, violinist Klaas Janzoons, and guitarist Rudy Trouvé. Formed in Antwerp in 1991, dEUS began their career as strictly a cover band, but soon began performing new material, honing an irreverent, free-form live show drawing on influences ranging from folk and punk to jazz and prog rock.
After issuing a four-track EP titled "Zea", dEUS mounted a series of London performances that led to a contract with Island Records. In 1994 the group released its full-length bow, Worst Case Scenario, winning acclaim for the singles "Suds and Soda" and "Via." After announcing plans to produce their own pornographic film, they issued 1995’s My Sister, My Clock; however, in the wake of the record’s release, Carlens exited to focus on his side project, Moondog Jr. Trouvé soon followed suit, channeling his energies into the group Kiss My Jazz; with new guitarist Craig Ward and bassist Danny "Cool Rocket" Mommens in tow, dEUS returned to the studio to cut 1997’s In a Bar, Under the Sea. The Ideal Crash followed in 1999.
Girls in Hawaii (Brussels BELGIUM)
Winning the "2004 Belgian Revelation Award", Girls In Hawaii gave us, with From Here To There, a first wonderful album, now a classic of Belgium. Their pop falsely gullible quickly drove those 6 musicians to heaven and the merit they deserve.
Composed by 6 boys from belgium, this band can be compared with Venus ou Soulwax, leaders of the Belgian rock scene. BUT, those boys recruted in 2000 by the 2 composers Antoine and Lio, refuse the comparison and assume their own style. The most amazing is that their first album From Here To There, (in stores in Feb.2004) already sounds like a 3rd or a 4th one: mature, luxurious and well written.

Piers Faccini (Paris FRANCE)
Piers Faccini is a masterful cartographer of the human heart, exploring territories of rootlessness, haunting bordertowns, and journeys of the soul. Each song is a world, creating atmospheres that stay with you well after the notes have faded. As a lyricist, he explores the poetics of the blues with deceptively simple repetitions that build to powerful and subtle narratives. His voice
has an emotional range rarely heard today, whilst his phrasing is quietly enticing, bold, yet understated; displaying a truly original vocal talent.
The Hot Springs (Montreal QC)
"The Hot Springs get in fights and then go dancing. Their music sounds kind of the same. They live in the arty city of Montréal. The two girls in the band come from hardcore punkland. They are the best ones. The two boys in the band come from indie-rock stupidland. They take naps and cry. We hooked up last year in the spring, but when we say spring in The Hot Springs, we’re talking about the gushing geyser thrusting water from the earth’s core kind of spring. We have a 5 song e.p. that we released ourselves cos we got paid big bucks for playing on Musiqueplus. It’s called “Rock Partouze” which is french means “rock orgy”. This is a play on words. Working on a scary-sounding full length to be released on who knows what label for september." "The Hot Springs get in fights and then go dancing. Their music sounds kind of the same. Syd Matters (Paris FRANCE)
Following a brilliant debut 7", an EP ("Fever in winter, shiver in June") and a handful of gigs (alongside St Thomas or Maximilian Hecker among others), Syd Matters has become one of this year’s major discoveries in France. Syd Matters was voted "best newcomer of 2003" by the readers of the French magazine "Les Inrockuptibles". Since then, he has been invited to "La Route du Rock" in St-Malo where he will be performing with 2 many DJs, Hot Hot Heat or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. He has toured with the Little Rabbits and M.A.S.S for the Inrocks/Nokia spring tour. Highly supported and acclaimed by the French press, he is now one of French music’s new acts to be watched. The reasons ? They will be obvious once you listen to his music: pop’s melodic rigour, rock’s convulsions, electronic arrangements and blues’ rough simplicity are skilfully blended to make his songs reach musical heights (Robert Wyatt, Nick Drake or Radiohead are often cited to describe the richness and subtelty of his music), leaving most challengers far behind him. Songs such as "End & Start Again" or "Black & White Eyes" should convince you... The 7", "End & Start Again", was released in France in november 2002. The EP was released in february 2003. Both have been supported by Rough Trade Shops in London. "A Whisper & A Sigh", his first album, is due out on August 26th in France.
By the way, Syd Matters is 23 and lives in Paris. But his songs are a thousand years old....
Poni Hoax (Paris FRANCE)
With Laurent Bardainne and Arnaud Roulin playing the keyboards, Nicolas Ker lead voice, Nicolas Villebrun for the guitar, and Vincent Taeger playing the drums, this electro band can be compared to big DJs like Miss Kittin or Ladytron.
Pony Up (Montreal QC)
Pony Up! is a four piece pop outfit from Montreal. Recently consolidated, the band is made up of sisters, lifelong friends and co-workers. The music is playful, straightforward but experimental, in that the band refuses to be constrained by any of their own material (let alone anyone else’s). Each song is its own project.
A number of years of intense dedication have put Pony Up! on fast- forward, both musically and professionally. The creative side continues to push forward with a new EP fully written and plans to record later in the spring. Meanwhile, the first 7" (split with Ben Lee) and self-titled EP (both released on Dim Mak/Ten Fingers Records) is just building momentum.
Priestess (Montreal, QUEBEC)
Priestess is from Montreal. They are four guys who rock hard with songs that are refreshingly
honest, heavy and fun. No gimmicks. You will love them.

Total Peace (Paris FRANCE)
Total Peace is a rock band sharing the same tastes for the early NY punk scene, komische, psychedelic music and shoegazing. Their intention is to compose music by mixing melodies with a primitive and repetitive background. A cross between the roughness of early Can albums, the energy of The Feelies, and the distorted sound of The Jesus and Mary Chain.
TTC (Paris FRANCE)
Miles away from independant hip hop clichés about how cool rap is, here comes Batards Sensibles: face down ass up, this is the album of the victory of machines on humans. And who can be spotted on the shoulders of those giant robots that stomp on what’s left of music business? Cuizinier, Tido Berman, Teki Latex, DJ Orgasmic, Para One and Tacteel, a smile on the lips.

Women & Children (Paris FRANCE)
Zenzile (Angers FRANCE)
Although puzzling when it first appeared in 1996, the name has now become familiar. Four albums, three maxi vinyls, hundreds of concerts accross France, Europe and beyond have made their groove. Pionneers in a growing dub scene, this 6 musician band (gathering Mathieu, Raggy, Vince, Werner, Alex, Moon) from western France, enhanced itself through collaboration after collaboration (Jean Gomis, Jamika, Vincent Segal). Zenzile perpetually renovates its music by refining and always looking for new sounds. They explore the dub universe without rest, offering the freedom of original dub, revealing its real nature of its origins. They never leave behind the true process of dub: construction and deconstruction. However, Zenzile is still a rock group... child of Clash and Ruts of course, but maybe also little brother of Sonic Youth and Fugazi. In their puzzling, enigmatic, and full of good ideas 4th album, ‘Modus Vivendi’, the 6 guys from Angers, without totally giving up the bases of that kind of music, with a drum ‘n’ bass section remaining as powerful as ever, go on new fields they had never explored.
Every so often a group comes along and combines all the best music you grew up with together, with a giddy hunger to push the envelope forwards into the future. Mixing angular guitars, pounding basslines and heady euphoria of New Order and the Mondays with the metropolitan nouse and witty introspection of bands like Blur, Grand National are that band. A pair of young Londoners about to release some of the best experimental pop songs this country has produced for, oh, too long...
